by Maurice Sendak

Prompt Deck

01Wh-question

Look at Max's face on this page. How do you think he's feeling?

Accept any feeling word, like angry, cross, fierce. Then expand: 'Yes, he looks really cross. I wonder what made him cross?'

02Completion

And Max said, 'Let the wild rumpus ___'

Pause and let them fill it in. If they don't, say 'start!' and read it again next time.

03Open-ended

What's happening on this page?

Use this on any busy spread. Whatever they say, expand it: 'Yes, and look, there's a monster with horns too.'

04Recall

Why did Max go to bed without his supper?

Ask after you've read this part. If they're stuck, give a hint: 'Remember, his mum was...?'

05Distancing

Have you ever felt as cross as Max? What did you do?

Connecting the book to their life is the most powerful prompt. There's no wrong answer.
